March 2021 Squiggly Pete, the Pirate

During the recent (2021) Coronovirus Lockdown, children's author Martyn Harvey was invited by Parkgate, Neston & Heswall Community Group Hip & Harmony CIC to contribute some story readings to help entertain local children stuck at home.

After six weeks of (Zoom) draw-alongs, readings and a couple of rapidly-produced videos, the story of "Squiggly Pete and the Curse of the Monster Zombie Mushy Peas Invasion... Thingy" evolved! (Phew - that's some title!) And, for the general greater good (or whatever his excuse is this time) Martyn's turning the story into a full-colour 50-page illustrated children's book!

Running the Liverpool Half

He did it! Martyn Harvey has completed the Liverpool Half Marathon, running for UK charity Brain Tumour Research to raise funds for research and awareness about this devastating disease. Why?...

Did YOU know that 16,000 people are diagnosed with brain tumours EVERY year?

Did you know brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer?

We didn't! And when Martyn heard these facts and heard about WEAR A HAT DAY - he decided that it would be great fun to get involved with Brain Tumour Research and try to make a small contribution to the cause... by doing something silly!

What he did...

Martyn is a bit of a running geek - and loves doing lengthy runs around the Thanet coast in preparation for the odd major event. In 2012 and 2018, he completed the London Marathon and raised hundreds of pounds for charities close to his heart.

This time, Martyn ran a slightly shorter distance - just 13 miles(!) at the Liverpool Half Marathon event on 15th March 2020 - part of Brain Tumour Awareness Month.

"It was an absolutely brilliant day out!" says Martyn.. "Even though I was running with a Saucepan on my Head I managed to get round the course in a reasonable time - for my age! The crowds were so supportive and I'd like to thank the hundreds of people - both spectators and runners - who waved, cheered or honked their car horns as we passed. In view of the current difficult times, I think it will be a while before we can get out there and do this again but - I can't wait!"

"And thank you all for donating to Brain Tumour Research - every penny counts!"

Martyn Harvey on BBC Radio Cornwall

So - how did it go? Martyn Harvey talks about his first LIVE Radio Interview with Emma Gill, BBC Radio Cornwall (13th March 2020)

"I have to say it was pretty nerve-wracking!" says Martyn. "Although I like my peace and quiet, I can be a bit extrovert sometimes... but I'm not used to talking live on-air to an audience numbering in the 1000's!"

"Emma and her producer were so welcoming and professional that they made me feel immediately at ease and - you know what I'm like - after a couple of minutes you couldn't get me to shut up!"

"We covered everything from my Cornish roots, how I came to start writing my funny books for children, what the first book is about and why I was running the Liverpool Half Marathon on 15th March (to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research)"

"A BIG Thank you to Emma and BBC Radio Cornwall for covering my story - let's hope it prompts a few donations to the charity!"

Chilton Primary School Loves The New Book!

Book Club members at Chilton Primary School in Ramsgate have become literary critics for a new story by local author and illustrator Martyn Harvey.

Pupils were enthralled by his latest tale called The Boy with the Saucepan Hat about Oliver Todd, an accident-prone boy, whose crazy and amazing adventures begin when he wakes up one morning with a saucepan stuck on his head!

Sheila Archer, senior teaching assistant who runs the school's Better Reading Support Partnership and the Chilton Book Club, sent their comments to the author - and they received a surprise reply.

She said: "Martyn Harvey told us that we were being acknowledged in the front of the book for the wonderfully constructive feedback we had provided."

"We would like to thank Martyn for visiting us and we look forward to him joining us again to lead some writing workshops so that more children can enjoy and be inspired by him."
